Via Ferrata Ewige Wand

The Ewige Wand Klettersteig is a striking via-ferrata route located in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, above the town of Bad Goisern. Carved into the rock of the vertical face known as the “Eternal Wall” (Ewige Wand), this route offers a blend of historical trail engineering, dramatic exposure and alpine scenery. Although relatively short in terms of vertical gain compared to longer alpine ferratas, its steep start, cliff-hanging tunnel access and outstanding viewpoint make it a memorable adventure for experienced climbers.

Trail Overview

  • Location: Ewige Wand, Totes Gebirge region, Oberösterreich (Upper Austria)

  • Vertical gain (via‐ferrata section): approximately 40–50 m (some sources note up to 100 m including approach)

  • Total time: Roughly 1–1.25 hours including approach and descent (via-ferrata alone 15-30 min)

  • Difficulty grade: Rated officially as C (moderate via-ferrata grade) with some variations C/D noted; route includes exposed sections and overhangs.

  • Setting: Wall face overlooking Bad Goisern, adjacent to the Rathlucken-Hütte approach, the route begins near the second tunnel of the rock-carved hiking trail.

Route Description

The approach begins from the Rathlucken Hut or via the rock-carved “Goiserer Höhenweg” path. One follows the trail toward the second tunnel in the Ewige Wand rock face. At the tunnel’s exit the via-ferrata start is clearly marked: a small bench and yellow sign denote the entry point.

From the start the route immediately presents an exposed vertical or slightly overhanging wall section fixed with steel cable and rungs. The first portion features steep climbing with significant exposure and “deep-drop” views beneath. According to one description: “an exposed section where you clip your carabiners … with a significant drop below. It then continues with a slightly steep, overhanging ascent until reaching an easier exit section.”

After the steeper section the face eases into a less demanding ramp or slab and the route leads to the summit plateau of the wall. From there one descends via marked hiking path, returning to the trail system that brought you up. The entire climb, including approach and descent, rewards with phenomenal views of Bad Goisern and the surrounding Dachstein massif.

Highlights

  • Magnificent exposure: the beginning of the route gives a thrilling “cliff-hanger” sensation, with vistas directly down to the valley.

  • Scenic route setting: the Ewige Wand is one of the steepest rock faces in the Totes Gebirge and offers a unique combination of engineered trail (tunnels) and natural vertical rock.

  • Short but intense: despite its brief duration, the route delivers a concentrated dose of adrenaline, making it suitable for a half-day outing or as part of a longer circuit combining other nearby ferratas.

  • Elevated viewpoint: from the exit one enjoys panoramic views over the Salzkammergut region, providing great photo opportunities and a sense of alpine achievement.

Difficulty & Required Skills

While the Ewige Wand Klettersteig is relatively short, its technical and mental demands are non-trivial:

  • Grade C: This implies steep vertical sections, possibly minor overhangs, and requires secure use of via-ferrata gear (helmet, harness, lanyard) and carabiners.

  • Exposure: The initial section hangs above the valley – climbers must be comfortable with heights and confident in their footing. Some sources list difficulty as C/D in places.

  • Technical proficiency: Although no advanced alpinism equipment (e.g., ice axes or crampons) is needed in normal summer conditions, one should be familiar with via-ferrata technique (clip/unclip, continuous attachment, safe movement).

  • Fitness/Endurance: Due to its brevity the physical demand is moderate, but the concentration required on exposed terrain raises the mental and technical challenge.

  • Avoidance of inexperienced users: Many guide sources note that on its own it is less rewarding for novices, but excellent when combined with adjoining ferrata routes.

When to Go

  • Season: Best visited during the late spring to early autumn months when the route is clear of snow and the tunnel access trail is safe. A general window is from May to October. Some closures may apply during breeding seasons of birds (check local notices).

  • Time of day: Morning hours are preferable to avoid strong midday sun on the wall, and for better lighting/photography.

  • Weather: As with all via-ferratas, avoid during rain or thunderstorms – rock and rungs get slippery, and exposure increases risk.

  • Crowds: Being short and accessible, it can be popular. For a quieter experience, visit early or on weekdays.

Access and Logistics

  • Start point: From Bad Goisern, drive or hike up to Rathlucken-Hütte or to the access road above the town toward Predigstuhl. A winding road leads to the parking area above town.

  • Approach: From the parking or hut follow the Goiserer Höhenweg trail (cut into the rock face) toward the second tunnel of the Ewige Wand. The start of the via-ferrata is located just before this second tunnel.

  • Descent: After completing the ferrata, follow the marked path left (or right depending on side) back down to the trail network and return to the starting point. Many climbers continue to the summit of Predigstuhl or combine with the adjacent “Josef Klettersteig” for a fuller tour.

  • Equipment hire & guiding: Local outfitters in Bad Goisern offer via-ferrata tours, guiding and equipment rental.

  • Transport: Bad Goisern is accessible via train from major Austrian cities, followed by local bus or taxi to the trailhead road.

  • Permits/Fees: No special permit is typically required, but check local regulations; some walls may have seasonal restrictions.

Why It Belongs on Every Adventurer’s List

This ferrata deserves a spot on any serious adventurer’s list for several reasons:

  • Compact but unforgettable: In less than an hour of climbing, you experience high-alpine exposure, rock-face ascents and sweeping views — ideal for those with limited time but maximum ambition.

  • Unique habitat and setting: The Ewige Wand combines a sheer limestone wall, tunnelled hiking path and the alpine atmosphere of the Salzkammergut — a distinct blend of nature and human engineering.

  • Gateway to something greater: It can be flown solo, yet also forms part of a richer circuit when joined with adjoining via-ferratas. Thus it suits both the “quick climb” and the “extended adventure” model.

  • Memorable visuals: The mix of rock, valley, tunnel and cliff makes for dramatic photography and lasting memories — a climb you’ll remember long after the descent.

  • Accessible challenge: It offers a genuine via-ferrata experience without requiring multi-day commitment or extreme alpinism — making it an attainable yet thrilling objective for competent climbers.
