Kitadake-katano-koya (“Kata-no-koya / Shoulder Hut”) is a major high-ridge hut sitting on the shoulder just below Mt. Kita (Kitadake)—Japan’s second-highest mountain. It’s famous for two things: prime ridge positioning (a short summit push away) and the fact that its campsite is often described as Japan’s highest designated camping area. It’s a key staging base for sunrise attempts and for multi-day Southern Alps traverses.
-
Location: On the ridge just below the summit zone of Mt. Kita, Southern Alps (Akaishi Mountains), Japan
Altitude: 3,000 m (hut area is around 3,000 m; the hut’s official site also references 3,011 m)
Type: Mountain hut + designated tent site
Camping capacity: 50 tents
Reservation: Required (hut stay)
Operating period (typical): mid-June to early November (season varies year to year)
-
Most parties reach Kata-no-koya as Day 1 or Day 2 of a staged Hirogawara → Mt. Kita plan, using the hut as the final staging point before the summit.
The hut is near the summit route, making it ideal for a controlled summit push (especially for sunrise).
Expect full alpine exposure at ~3,000 m: wind, fog, and sudden temperature drops are normal even in summer.
-
A high-hut with serious logistics—great infrastructure for the altitude, but still “mountain rules.”
Campsite in front of the hut with strong wind risk; the hut explicitly warns that tents have been blown away in bad weather and recommends proper mountain tent skills.
Water: a water point is listed as available, but it’s not right at the hut (the regional listing notes a water source, with a short access time/distance).
Typical hut model: dormitory-style sleeping, fixed schedules, and early arrivals.
-
This is a “summit-timed” hut. Evenings are short—most guests are planning weather windows, prepping packs, and sleeping early. In good conditions, the ridge setting delivers outstanding views (Fuji visibility is specifically highlighted by the hut).
-
Kata-no-koya is most relevant for:
Mt. Kita summit staging (close enough for an efficient final push).
Multi-day Southern Alps itineraries where hut spacing and timing are essential.
A high-altitude campsite experience that is rare even in Japan.
-
Best window: typically July–September for the most reliable snow-free hiking conditions.
Shoulder seasons (June / October) can feel winter-like at 3,000 m—plan for cold, wind, and reduced visibility.
-
Hikers doing a staged Mt. Kita ascent
Photographers and sunrise chasers
Campers with proper high-wind tent skills who want a true high-altitude overnight
Why This Hut Is Worth Visiting
Kitadake-katano-koya is “infrastructure where it matters”: a perfectly positioned high-ridge base at ~3,000 m with a 50-tent designated campsite, enabling controlled summit timing and a rare ultra-high camping experience on Japan’s second-highest peak.
