Via Ferrata du Parc Thermal
Nestled in the gorge of the Gorges du Bon Nant, between the thermal baths of Parc Thermal du Fayet and the village of Saint‑Gervais‑les‑Bains (Haute-Savoie, France), the Via Ferrata du Parc Thermal is a thrilling vertical adventure. It weaves through narrow rock walls, overhanging ledges, and dramatic suspension bridges, offering climbers a mix of sheer exposure, forested canyon ambiance and alpine gorge scenery. Type: Via ferrata (fixed-cable climbing route with rungs, ladders, bridges)
Length & sections: Divided into three progressive sections of increasing difficulty:
Section 1: difficulty AD+ (Assez difficile +), approx. 1 h
Section 2: difficulty D+ (Difficile +), approx. 1 h 30 m
Section 3: difficulty TD+ (Très difficile +), approx. 1 h
Special features: Equipped with multiple suspension structures: three Nepal-bridges, a log beam bridge, a monkey bridge, beam walk, overhang traverses.
Total duration: Roughly 3 to 3½ hours, not including approach and descent.
Route Description
The climb begins behind the Parc Thermal at the Fayet, where a path leads up to the rock face of the gorge.
Approach: From the thermal baths, a 10-15 minute footpath through forest brings you to the base of the via ferrata.
Section 1 (AD+): A steep start, introducing you to the gorge atmosphere. A rhythmic sequence of metal rungs, overhangs and forested rock. The first escape route is located at the end of this section.
Section 2 (D+): The challenge ramps up—larger overhangs, traverses, and the first of the major bridges appear. The route crosses the gorge again and gains exposure. Another escape point is available towards the end.
Section 3 (TD+): The final push. This part demands full commitment: long overhangs, exposed traverses high above the gorge floor, Nepalese footbridges of great length, final exit near the ruins of the Châtelet. Only for very strong climbers.
Descent: After completion, follow the marked path down through the forest back to Saint-Gervais-le-Fayet or the nearby parking lots. Always check the posted route for descent and exit options.
Highlights
Dramatic canyon setting: climbing through the gorge of the Bon Nant with waterfalls, high rock walls and deep green shade.
Suspended bridges and thrilling aerial components: the Nepalese bridges, monkey bridges and log walkway are real showpieces.
Progressive difficulty: suitable as a progression experience—from “challenging” to “very difficult” within the same route.
Scenic reward: once above the gorge you’ll catch glimpses of the Mont Blanc massif region, and the surrounding alpine village vibes.
Unique good-value experience: easily reachable from Saint-Gervais, with equipment rental and guided options available.
Difficulty & Required Skills
Grade: Section 1 (AD+), Section 2 (D+), Section 3 (TD+) — French via ferrata grading.
Physical demands: Strong upper-body endurance (arms, grip), good leg strength, surefootedness on metal rungs and bridges. Many climbers report real fatigue in the arms.
Technical competence: Familiarity with via ferrata gear, ability to clip and travel steadily on cable systems, comfort with exposure and heights.
Environmental awareness: Must not start in stormy weather; rock can be damp or slick, especially in gorge settings.
Restrictions: Not suitable for beginners or unaccompanied minors. Minimum height 1.50 m is recommended.
Recommended gear: Via ferrata harness, helmet, gloves, shock-absorbing lanyards, two auto-locking karabiners, good shoes.
Guiding advisable: Many operators in Saint-Gervais offer guided outings. Highly recommended for sections 2 & 3.
When to Go
Season: Typically open from late spring (May) through to early autumn (October). Summer months are ideal.
Best conditions: Dry weather, minimal flow in the gorge path, early morning for cooler temperatures and fewer climbers.
Avoid: Stormy weather or post-rain intense flows in the gorge. Winter closure is common due to snow, ice and rockfall risk.
Access and Logistics
Getting there: Drive or take train from Chamonix to Saint-Gervais-le-Fayet (approx. 25 min). Park at the Bettex gondola parking or near the Parc Thermal.
Approach path: From the Parc Thermal footbridge or Châtelet ruins, follow the trail to the base of the via ferrata.
Equipment rental & guides: Available locally in Saint-Gervais. Booking in advance recommended, especially for guided groups.
Safety & exit routes: Two official escape exits are provided after sections 1 and 2. Use them if conditions or fatigue demand retreat.
Cost & supervision: Guided full route outing can cost about €150 per person (rates vary) when using a local guide.
