Via Ferrata Postalmklamm

Nestled within the dramatic gorge of the Postalmklamm near Strobl in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, the Postalmklamm Klettersteig offers a thrilling via ferrata experience. Carved into steep cliffs beside the rushing Russbach stream, the route combines rock-wall climbing, suspension bridges, narrow ledges, and an optional high-difficulty variant to create a memorable alpine adventure.

Trail Overview

  • Location: Strobl / Wolfgangsee region, Salzburg State, Austria.

  • Total length: Approx. 4.5–5.5 km, including approach and descent.

  • Elevation gain: Around 410 m ascent (and the same descent) in typical descriptions.

  • Difficulty rating: The main route is graded C (moderate) with a variant reaching D and even F (very difficult) at the upper section called “Gamsleckenwand”.

  • Time required: Approximately 3 h for the ascent, plus about 1 h for descent; total around 4-4.5 hours or more depending on variant.

  • Terrain type: Gorge (klamm) climbing route with vertical and exposed sections, cable ladders, wire bridges, artificial rungs, and a thrilling narrow canyon section.

  • Highlights: Multiple rope-bridges over a torrent, a jump (“Gattsprung”), the steep final wall variant, and a high-adrenaline canyon feel.

Route Description

From the car park near hairpin bend 2 on the Postalm toll road, you descend about 200 m on forest trail to reach the entry of the canyon.
The route begins by crossing a suspension foot bridge into the gorge, then proceeds via fixed cables and artificial steps along the rock face above the Russbach stream. You will encounter several rope-bridges (five or more) spanning between narrow rock walls and finally arrive at the steep Gamsleckenwand-wall section.
At the narrowest part of the canyon there is a “Gattsprung” (a small gap jump of approx. 1.5 m) where the route crosses the gorge via a narrow ledge or bridge.
For those choosing the variant, the F-grade section demands strong upper-body effort, precise footing and greater exposure. Alternatively, a bypass leads out to the exit path.
From the exit ledge you follow a marked mountain trail up to the Postalm plateau (or to the Schnitzhofalm snack station) and then descend back to the car park.

Highlights

  • The rope-bridges over a roaring alpine stream provide dynamic, airy exposure and make for excellent photo moments.

  • The canyon atmosphere of the Postalmklamm gorge sets a dramatic mood — sheer rock walls rising either side and water flowing far below.

  • The Gamsleckenwand final wall, especially for those taking the variant, offers a memorable climax with overhanging rock and serious via-ferrata style climbing.

  • Scenic reward: After the exertion you reach the Postalm alpine pasture high above the gorge, giving a contrasting peaceful finish.

  • A compact yet action-packed route: you achieve a full alpine climbing experience in half a day, making it ideal for adventure seekers with limited time.

Difficulty and Required Skills

The base route is rated C (“moderate via ferrata”) but with sections rising to D and an optional F variant (very difficult).
Skills & requirements:

  • Good surefootedness and head for heights — the route is exposed with significant drop-offs and narrow ledges.

  • Comfortable with fixed cables, metal rungs and rope/ladder bridges.

  • For the D/F sections (especially Gamsleckenwand) you need upper-body strength, good foot placement and possibly extra equipment (e.g., short loops, extra carabiner) for smaller climbers.

  • Standard via-ferrata gear: helmet, full body harness, via-ferrata set (energy absorber + twin lanyards), gloves, sturdy shoes. A lightweight waterproof jacket may be wise given the damp nature of the gorge.

  • Not suitable for beginners or young children unless extremely confident; the variant especially demands mountain experience.

When to Go

The best season is late spring through early autumn, typically from about June to October, when the gorge is free of ice and the toll road is open.
In summer you’ll likely find the rock surface damp or slippery (especially near water flow) — caution is advised. For fewer crowds visit in May or September.
Avoid after heavy rainfall or when the gorge is swollen from meltwater, as this increases risk and exposure in the canyon section.

Access and Logistics

  • By car: From Strobl (near Wolfgangsee), take the Postalm-Panorama-Strasse toll road toward Postalm. Drive to the car park near hairpin bend 2 (Gamsfeldkehre) where the via ferrata approach trail begins. Toll fee is around €17 for a car.

  • Alternative transit: Train to Bad Ischl or Salzburg then bus to Strobl and onward to parking area.

  • Approach: From the car park, follow the marked forest trail down about 200 m to the canyon entry (approx. 10–15 minutes).

  • Descent: After completing the via ferrata you can exit via the marked trail up to the Postalm plateau or alpine hut (Schnitzhofalm), then follow trail back to car park (approx. 1 hour).

  • Gear rental: Possible in nearby Strobl or Salzkammergut region; ensure you have via-ferrata set and helmet.

  • Safety: Always check weather conditions, ensure you’re physically prepared and avoid starting late in the day. The route is known to be dangerous when misused.
