Route Description

The Kupfergeist Klettersteig starts above the village of Hüttschlag, at the entrance of the Grossarltal Valley. From the parking area near the valley’s end, a steep but scenic approach trail (around 30–40 minutes) leads to the base of the wall.

The route begins with vertical sections immediately demanding strength and precision. Climbers soon reach a distinctive rock pillar, where the exposure intensifies, and the scenery opens toward the surrounding peaks. From there, the line follows a sequence of overhanging and traversing sections across compact limestone, occasionally requiring dynamic moves and full body tension.

Halfway up, there is a rest platform where climbers can recover before the final and most challenging part — a long vertical wall graded E, characterized by sustained difficulty and sparse footholds. The final meters lead over an airy ridge to the top exit point, where a magnificent alpine panorama unfolds across the Grossarltal Valley.

The descent follows a marked trail (about 40 minutes) back to the parking area.

Highlights

  • Spectacular exposure: Sheer vertical climbing on solid limestone with constant views of the valley.

  • Athletic and modern design: Steel cables, pegs, and steps placed to test endurance and technique.

  • Alpine atmosphere: Surrounded by peaks of the Hohe Tauern range, with eagles often circling above.

  • Accessibility: Easily reachable from Hüttschlag, yet feeling completely immersed in high mountain terrain.

  • Variety of movement: A mix of vertical walls, traverses, and short overhangs offering continuous engagement.

Difficulty and Required Skills

The Kupfergeist Klettersteig is officially graded D/E, placing it among the most demanding via ferratas in Salzburg. It requires excellent upper-body strength, endurance, and confidence in vertical terrain.

Recommended experience and preparation:

  • Prior experience on routes of grade C or D.

  • High fitness level and ability to handle exposure for extended periods.

  • Proper via ferrata equipment: certified set with energy absorber, helmet, harness, and gloves.

  • Stable weather conditions — the route is fully exposed and unsuitable during rain or storms.

This is not a beginner route. Even experienced climbers often find the overhanging sections and length physically taxing. Good mental focus and efficient clipping technique are essential for safety and stamina.

When to Go

The climbing season generally runs from late May to early October, depending on weather and snow conditions.
Because the route faces south, it dries quickly after rain and can be hot in midsummer afternoons. The best conditions are usually in June, September, and early October, when temperatures are moderate and visibility is excellent.

Always check local weather forecasts before attempting the climb, as thunderstorms can develop rapidly in the alpine region.
