Via Ferrata Galitzenklamm – Adrenalin
Hidden in the dramatic limestone cliffs near Lienz, in Austria’s East Tyrol, the Via Ferrata Galitzenklamm – Adrenalin Route is one of the most thrilling and scenic iron paths in the region.
Set within the spectacular Galitzen Gorge, where glacial waters carve through narrow rock walls, this route lives up to its name — Adrenalin. It offers a perfect combination of vertical climbing, rushing waterfalls, and dizzying exposure.
For seasoned via ferrata enthusiasts, this is one of the most rewarding climbs in the Austrian Alps.
Trail Overview
Location: Galitzenklamm Gorge, near Lienz, East Tyrol, Austria
Route Name: Adrenalin via ferrata
Length: Approximately 1.2 km of ferrata section
Vertical gain: Around 300 m
Estimated duration: 2–3 hours (depending on pace and experience)

The Adrenalin route is part of a larger via ferrata park in the Galitzenklamm, which includes other, easier routes such as Gamsblick and Galitzenklamm Wasserfall. However, Adrenalin stands out as the most challenging and spectacular of them all.
Route Description
The adventure begins at the entrance to the Galitzenklamm Gorge, where visitors pass through a small gate and follow a wooden walkway above the rushing river. Soon the trail branches off toward the steep rock face — the start of the via ferrata.
The first meters immediately set the tone: vertical climbing along iron rungs with constant exposure. The route follows the right-hand wall of the gorge, staying close to the waterfall that gives the site its dramatic soundscape. Mist from the falling water adds atmosphere — and challenge.
After a demanding vertical section rated D, the ferrata continues with airy traverses and hanging crossings. One of the most impressive parts is the “Waterfall Wall”, where climbers ascend directly beside a curtain of spray, anchored to solid steel cables and stemples. Short rest points allow you to admire the power of the gorge below.
Halfway up, a narrow bridge of steel steps crosses a gap between two cliffs. Beyond this, the wall steepens again with overhanging moves rated E — the route’s crux. Upper-body strength and precise footwork are essential here.
The final section eases slightly as it approaches the exit point at the top of the gorge, where a panoramic platform overlooks the entire Lienz valley and the peaks of the Lienzer Dolomites.
Descent is made via a marked hiking trail back to the gorge entrance, taking around 25–30 minutes.

Difficulty and Required Skills
The Adrenalin via ferrata is officially graded D/E on the Austrian via ferrata scale, placing it among the most demanding routes in Tyrol.
Technical Requirements:
Previous experience on via ferratas of grade C or higher
Very good physical fitness, particularly arm and grip strength
No fear of heights; comfort with vertical and exposed terrain
Competence in clipping gear quickly and safely under stress
Ability to rest efficiently on steep ground
Equipment Required:
Certified via ferrata set (Y-lanyard with energy absorber)
Helmet and climbing harness
Sturdy approach or via ferrata shoes
Gloves (recommended)
Optional: light backpack, water, and camera (well secured)
This route is not suitable for beginners or children. If you are new to via ferrata, the nearby Gamsblick Route (rated B/C) provides a good warm-up before attempting Adrenalin.
When to Go
The best period to climb the Galitzenklamm Adrenalin route is late May through October, when the gorge is open to visitors and the weather is stable.
Early summer offers the most powerful waterfalls due to snowmelt, while late summer provides drier rock and clearer skies.
Avoid the route during rain or storms — the rock becomes slippery, and the proximity to waterfalls increases the risk of exposure to spray and wind.
