Via Ferrata Edelrid

The Edelrid Klettersteig — formerly known as the Salewa Klettersteig — is a spectacular via ferrata route in the Allgäu / Oberjoch region (Bavaria, Germany) offering a thrilling alpine experience. Despite being marketed as “family-friendly” in some sources, it demands real concentration and vertical experience. Located on the north-face of the Iseler peak (1,876 m) above Oberjoch, it blends steep rock faces, airy traverses and fine views across the Allgäu Alps.

Trail Overview

  • Distance / Length: approximately 2.8 km of secured route (longer if including approach and descent).

  • Elevation gain: around 300–400 m from the Bergstation or parking area up to the route and peak.

  • Highest point: about 1,876 m (Iseler summit)

  • Difficulty: Rated B/C (medium) for the main sections, with two steeper portions rated up to C.

  • Season: Typically open from early/mid June to mid-October, subject to snow and local restrictions.

Route Description

The Edelrid Klettersteig is accessed from the village of Oberjoch. There are two main variants of approach: take the chairlift or cable car up to the Bergstation of the Iselerbahn (if operational) or ascend on foot from the valley. From the Bergstation (around 1,600 m), a walking path leads about 20-30 minutes to the clearly signed start of the via ferrata.

Section I: The initial part climbs through a series of metallic rungs, cables and natural rock bands in the north flank of Iseler. After a short steep section you reach the so-called “Bergführerplatte” — a more challenging block (rated C) with overhanging features, though recent modifications have eased it somewhat.

Section II: After the summit of Iseler, the route continues to the Iseler-Scharte and then across a more moderate panorama band. In some descriptions the route continues further towards the Kühgundkopf but this extension may be less maintained and in some years closed.

Descent: From the summit or exit point one follows marked paths back down, either via the normal hiking trail or via the Bergbahn station if available. Allow sufficient time for the descent and take care on loose terrain.

Highlights

  • Dramatic exposure and rock-face climbing in an alpine setting, yet without full mountaineering complexity.

  • Spectacular views over the Allgäu Alps, with glimpses into valleys and neighbouring peaks from the ridge.

  • A route that bridges hiking and climbing by offering via ferrata access to high-alpine environment for experienced hikers.

  • A relatively short but intense adventure: perfect for a day-trip with the feel of a mountaineering outing.

Difficulty and Required Skills

Although the rating is “medium” (B/C), the Edelrid Klettersteig should not be underestimated:

  • Requires via ferrata equipment: helmet, harness, lanyard Set-Karabiners appropriate for via ferrata.

  • Must be comfortable with vertical terrain, exposure, and steeper rock sections. The “Bergführerplatte” section reaches difficulty C.

  • A good level of fitness and leg strength is required. All footing is on rock or mixed rock/vegetation; balance and sure-footing are essential.

  • Weather sensitivity: on damp or rock-wet days the route becomes more demanding; avoid after heavy rain.

  • Beginners should only undertake this with a qualified guide or experienced partner; children under 12 years are generally discouraged.

When to Go

  • Best period: June (once snow has cleared) through mid-October, provided the cable-car services operate and the via ferrata is open.

  • Avoid: Early spring (risk of lingering snow/ice on the route) and late autumn when daylight is short and lift services may be closed.

  • Choose a clear weather day for the best experience and to maximise views; heavy clouds or storms reduce safety and visibility significantly.

  • Start early: to avoid crowds and to ensure you complete descent while still daylight.

Access and Logistics

  • Location: Oberjoch (Bad Hindelang), Allgäu Alps, Bavaria, Germany. The Iseler peak lies at 1,876 m.

  • Parking / Transport: Park at Oberjoch near the Bergbahn valley station. If available, ride the Iselerbahn or forego it and hike up.

  • Follow signs to the Edelrid Klettersteig’s trailhead from the Bergstation or foot-access route – look for info board and start of cable protections.

  • Equipment Rental & Guides: Locals often provide via ferrata gear rental and guided tours; advisable for those less familiar.

  • Safety & Permits: No special permit typically required beyond standard mountain etiquette, but check current conditions, seasonal closures and lift service availability.

Why It Belongs on Every Adventurer’s List

The Edelrid Klettersteig offers a unique mix of alpine ascent, via ferrata thrill and spectacular panorama — all within reach in a single day. For those with solid hiking experience and a taste for rock climbing, it provides a gateway to vertical terrain without committing to full mountaineering. The route’s position above the Allgäu valley grants world-class views, while its secured nature makes it accessible to well-prepared non-climbers seeking more than a standard hike. Whether you’re honing your vertical skills or simply chasing exposure and alpine beauty, this route rewards with intensity, scenery and adventure.
