Kosumo-goya is a compact, welcoming mountain hut in Japan’s Central Alps, positioned on the ridge route between Mt. Kosumo-yama (越百山) and Mt. Fukutogiyama (福栃山, 2,436 m). It’s known for a “home-like” atmosphere, but operationally it’s very strict: complete reservation-only.

    • Location: Saddle between Mt. Kosumo-yama and Mt. Fukutogiyama, Central Alps (Nagano, Kiso area)

    • Altitude: ~2,340 m

    • Type: Mountain hut

    • Capacity: 30 sleeping places

    • Reservations: Mandatory (complete reservation system)

    • Season: Typically July to early/mid-October (varies by year)

    • Historically there were approaches from both the Ina Valley and Kiso Valley, but current access is typically described as Kiso Valley side only.

    • Expect a long ridge day with sustained climbing and limited “easy exits” once committed.

    • Small hut, simple logistics: plan for classic hut-style rules and fixed schedules.

    • Water (important): route guidance notes a water point before the hut and warns that the hut does not supply water to non-staying visitors, so day hikers should fill up before reaching the hut.

  • Kosumo-goya is often described as a hut where people feel “at home,” but it remains a stage hut: early arrivals, early nights, and early departures to match weather windows and ridge timing.

  • Kosumo-goya is most relevant for:

    • Multi-day ridge circuits in the Central Alps, especially routes linking Kosumo-yama ↔ Minami-Komagatake ↔ Utsugi direction itineraries (route-dependent).

    • Splitting long ridge stages into safer, more controllable days.

    • Best window: July–September for the most reliable snow-free conditions.

    • Key risks: ridge wind, fog/whiteouts, and strict water planning.

    • Experienced hikers doing Central Alps ridge traverses

    • People comfortable with reservation-only systems and controlled logistics

    • Not ideal for spontaneous trips (because you must book ahead).

Why This Hut Is Worth Visiting

With 30 beds at ~2,340 m, Kosumo-goya is “small infrastructure in the right place”: it makes serious Central Alps ridge itineraries more manageable—especially when you need a reliable stage stop and disciplined logistics in committing terrain.
