Via Ferrata Daubenhorn

The Via Ferrata Daubenhorn is one of the longest and most impressive via ferrata routes in Switzerland. Located above the village of Leukerbad in the Valais Alps, it is a demanding full-day adventure that climbs dramatic limestone walls, traverses exposed ridges, and offers sweeping views over the Rhone Valley. Known for its scale, verticality, and alpine atmosphere, this route is suited to experienced climbers seeking a long, technical and high-commitment challenge.

Trail Overview

Duration
8 to 10 hours for the full loop, including the descent. Expect a long and sustained day.

Difficulty
Very difficult. Graded K4–K5 depending on conditions. Extremely exposed sections and long sustained climbs.

Best for
Experienced via ferrata climbers with excellent fitness, strong endurance, and confidence on vertical terrain.

Exposure
High to extreme exposure throughout. Several long vertical walls, traverses above deep voids, and sections with significant air beneath your feet.

Required Gear
Certified via ferrata kit (helmet, harness, Y-lanyard with energy absorber), gloves, sturdy mountain footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, plenty of water, and food. An optional short rope may be useful for less experienced partners.

Route Description

The route begins above the Gemmi side of Leukerbad, following a marked trail to the start of the cables. The first section warms up with moderate ladders and traverses before quickly entering steep, vertical terrain. A long sequence of metal rungs and exposed crossings leads to the famous “big wall,” a nearly uninterrupted vertical climb that demands both strength and endurance.

Midway through the ascent, the route weaves through chimneys, ledges, and open slabs, maintaining steady exposure. Higher up, a series of airy bridges and metal steps lead onto the upper ridge, where the alpine environment becomes more evident. The final push continues along ladders and rocky features until reaching the upper plateau near the Daubenhorn summit area. From here, a marked hiking trail leads back down toward Leukerbad or the Gemmi Pass pathways.

Highlights

  • One of the longest via ferratas in the Alps, offering a full day of adventure.

  • The massive vertical wall section is a signature challenge.

  • Constant panoramic views toward the Valais peaks and the Rhone Valley.

  • High-alpine atmosphere without requiring traditional climbing.

  • A varied mix of ladders, traverses, vertical walls, chimneys, and airy ridge features.

Difficulty and Required Skills

This is a very demanding route, both physically and mentally. Climbers must be comfortable with continuous exposure and extended periods on steep or vertical terrain. Strong upper-body and core strength are required, as well as excellent endurance for a full-day effort. Prior experience on advanced via ferrata routes is essential. Weather must be taken seriously, as storms, wind, or wet rock can quickly turn the route dangerous.

When to Go

Typically accessible from late June to early October, depending on snow conditions. Early mornings are recommended to avoid afternoon storms and to ensure enough daylight. The route should be avoided in wet, icy, or unstable weather.

Access and Logistics

Start in Leukerbad and follow signs toward the Gemmi cable car area or the Daubenhorn via ferrata trail. The approach takes 1 to 1.5 hours. No cable assistance is provided on the ascent itself. Plan for a long descent along marked trails toward Leukerbad or via the Gemmi Pass. Ample parking and accommodation exist in the village. Water sources are limited, so carry enough for the full day.

Why It Belongs on Every Adventurer’s List

For those seeking a route that pushes endurance, skill, and mental resilience, Daubenhorn stands among the finest in Switzerland.
