Otenjo Hutte is a classic ridge-stage mountain hut located in the saddle west of Mt. Otensho on the Omote-Ginza traverse—one of Japan’s most famous long ridge routes. It’s an ideal stop for hikers linking stages between the Tsubakuro (Enzan-so) area and the Yarigatake side, and it’s also increasingly used as a pre-night base for the Yarigatake North Kama Ridge plans.
-
Location: Saddle west of Mt. Otensho, Omote-Ginza ridge corridor, Northern Japanese Alps, Japan
Altitude: 2,650 m
Type: Mountain hut / lodge-style hut
Capacity: 80 people
Note: some regional listings mention ~100 normally, with reduced operational capacity in certain seasons (e.g., ~70 in 2025).
Camping: No tent site
Operator: Yarigatake Sanso Group (official page)
-
Otenjo Hutte is typically reached as part of a multi-day ridge itinerary (not a quick out-and-back).
Common context: Omote-Ginza traverse stages (Tsubakuro side ↔ Yarigatake side).
Terrain: continuous ridge walking with exposure to wind and fog; timing can change drastically with weather.
Difficulty: T3 (can feel T4 in poor visibility or strong winds).
-
A practical, traverse-focused hut with controlled logistics.
Toilets: available.
Power: self-generated (generator).
Water: commonly listed as no natural water point; water is sold per litre, while overnight guests receive water free (policy can vary by season).
Some listings mention AED installed and public phone availability.
-
Expect a classic ridge-hut rhythm: early arrival, fixed meal times, early lights-out, and early departures. Because it sits on a prime traverse line, it can feel busy even with a modest capacity.
-
Otenjo Hutte is especially relevant for:
The Omote-Ginza traverse (major multi-day ridge route).
Quick access to major viewpoints like Ushikubi Lookout (often highlighted as a short side trip).
As a strategic stage between larger hubs (e.g., Daiten-sou / Enzan-so side and the Yarigatake network side).
-
Best season: typically July to September for the most stable “green season” ridge conditions.
Main risks: strong wind, fog/whiteouts, rapid temperature drops (even in summer).
-
Multi-day trekkers on the Omote-Ginza route
Strong hikers who want to split long ridge stages for better timing and safety margins
Not ideal for campers (no tent site)
Why This Hut Is Worth Visiting
At 2,650 m with ~80 beds, Otenjo Hutte is “infrastructure where it matters”: perfectly positioned to make one of Japan’s best ridge traverses more manageable, while offering classic Northern Alps scenery and strong stage-to-stage logistics.
