Karasawa-koya is the smaller, more “homey” mountain hut in the Karasawa Cirque area—often chosen by hikers who want the Karasawa atmosphere but prefer a quieter, more intimate hut than the large-scale Karasawa Hütte nearby. It sits on a south-facing slope with a wide view over the cirque and is a key staging point for routes toward the Hotaka peaks.

    • Location: Karasawa Cirque (Hotaka Range), Northern Japanese Alps, Japan

    • Altitude: 2,350 m

    • Type: Mountain hut (classic Japanese alpine hut style)

    • Capacity: 100 people

      • Note: a regional hut directory also lists an operational figure around ~85 (varies by season/policy).

    • Tenting: Commonly listed as none / not a main tent base (camping in Karasawa is typically centered around Karasawa Hütte’s large tent site).

  • Karasawa-koya is normally reached on foot via the classic Kamikochi approach corridor:

    • Typical flow: Kamikochi → Tokusawa → Yokoo → Karasawa (long valley approach that becomes more alpine near the cirque).

    • From Karasawa, routes branch upward toward the Hotaka ridgeline (serious terrain depending on objective and conditions).

  • This is a smaller hut by Karasawa standards, focused on warmth and practicality.

    • Dormitory-style accommodation and meal service in season.

    • A strong “small hut” feel—more personal and less “tent-city logistics” than the larger hut nearby.

  • Expect a classic hut rhythm (early dinner, early lights-out), but with a more intimate atmosphere than the big hubs. In peak foliage season, everything in Karasawa becomes busy—Karasawa-koya simply feels more “contained” inside that overall crowd pressure.

  • Karasawa-koya is well placed for:

    • Staging Hotaka objectives (Okuhotaka / Karasawa-dake / Kita-Hotaka direction itineraries)

    • A quieter overnight while still being in the heart of the Karasawa basin’s alpine landscape.

    • Best window: July–September for the most straightforward trail conditions.

    • Peak experience: late September to early October for autumn colors—expect extreme demand in Karasawa overall.

    • Hikers who want the Karasawa Cirque experience but prefer a smaller hut vibe

    • Parties staging for Hotaka ridgeline objectives

    • Photographers who want sunrise/sunset atmosphere without being based in the largest campsite zone

Why This Hut Is Worth Visiting

At 2,350 m with a listed capacity around 100, Karasawa-koya is “small infrastructure in the right place”: it delivers the iconic Karasawa setting with a calmer, more personal hut feel—while still functioning as a serious staging base for the Hotaka range.
