Via Ferrata Rio Secco
Via Ferrata Rio Secco is one of Trentino’s most engaging and dynamic ferrata routes, winding through a narrow canyon carved by centuries of water flow. Known for its athletic moves, playful overhangs, and dramatic rock formations, it offers a perfect mix of sportiness and scenic beauty. This is a ferrata that rewards climbers who enjoy physical sections, compact limestone, and a sense of adventure inside a shaded gorge.
Trail Overview
Duration: 2 to 3 hours (depending on flow, crowds, and comfort level)
Difficulty: Medium–Hard (C/D sections; some athletic moves)
Best for: Intermediate ferrata climbers seeking a canyon-style route with overhangs and varied terrain
Exposure: Moderate; the gorge is enclosed, but several vertical walls and airy steps require confidence
Required Gear:
Certified via ferrata set (Y-lanyard with energy absorber)
Climbing helmet
Climbing harness
Sturdy ferrata gloves
Hiking or approach shoes with good grip
Optional but useful: light layer (the canyon is cool and humid), waterproof shell after heavy rain due to dripping walls.
Route Description
The route begins at the base of the Rio Secco gorge, entering immediately into a narrow, shaded environment shaped by flowing water. The first section follows the curved, polished walls of the canyon with short vertical steps and well-spaced metal holds. Soon after, the terrain steepens, leading into the route’s signature overhangs—short but physical, requiring strong foot placement and controlled movement.
Midway, the ferrata traverses compact limestone walls above pools and smooth slabs. The canyon widens slightly, allowing for a brief rest. Vertical passages follow, including ladders and stem-in-the-groove sections where climbers use both sides of the canyon for support. The final section climbs a long wall out of the gorge, offering the most exposure of the entire route before topping out on forested terrain. A short walking path leads back to the starting point.
Highlights
Unique canyon setting with polished limestone walls.
Athletic overhangs that add a playful challenge.
Cool microclimate ideal for warm days.
Well-maintained metalwork and anchors.
A natural mix of vertical climbing, traverses, and gorge-style movement.
Difficulty and Required Skills
This ferrata is best suited for those who already have experience with intermediate routes (grades B/C–C/D). The physical sections, especially the overhangs, require upper-body strength and efficient footwork. Climbers should be comfortable with vertical exposure and capable of making controlled, deliberate movements on smooth limestone. Good endurance is recommended to maintain a steady pace along the sustained middle section.
When to Go
Late spring to early autumn is the best period.
The gorge remains cool even during hot months, making it ideal for summer days. Avoid the route after heavy rain, as the canyon can be slippery and wet, and water flow may increase. Early mornings provide the best lighting and the least humidity.
Access and Logistics
Via Ferrata Rio Secco is located in the Val di Cembra region of Trentino, Italy, near the village of Lavisé.
Parking: Small parking areas are available near the trailhead. Arrive early on weekends.
Approach: 20–30 minutes on marked paths through forest and rocky terrain.
Descent: A simple hiking trail leads back down to the starting area in roughly 20 minutes.
Conditions: The canyon environment can retain moisture; check for route conditions after rain.
No permits are required, and the route is usually accessible without restrictions.
